The diagram below shows the directory structure for the Sage X3 Application server.
Note: If the database server is on another physical machine, the database directory will be on that server and not on the applications server.
All the data for the Sage X3 folders are stored in one SQL Server/Oracle database. The folder is a database user that owns its tables and data and represents the application layer.

- The database directory contains the physical database files, which are database-dependent (SQL Server or Oracle) and not controlled by Sage X3.
- The database files can be stored on other disks. Distributing the files over several disks is encouraged.
- In the diagram above, SQL Server or Oracle files are organized into data, log, Scripts, tmp, and trace folders.
- The runtime directory contains runtime executables and scripts.
- The SERVX3 folder is used for batch server management and is transparent to the end-user.
- The lan subdirectory contains the local menu values for the installed languages.
- The Folders directory contains the Sage X3 folder structures. The diagram below shows the structure of the SEED folder.
- A folder in Sage X3 contains the rules, parameters, dictionaries, specific developments, and data for several companies. This means that the folder contains a Customers table, a Suppliers table, a Product table, etc. common to all companies managed by that folder. It also contains general parameters, transactions, and management rules.
- A folder in Sage X3 is defined in a record stored in its reference (parent) folder (this is usually the X3 folder).
- When Sage X3 is installed on a system, the X3 folder is automatically created. The X3 folder is the top-level reference for all other folders. DEMO is the default demonstration folder containing a set of predefined parameters and data.
- The tmp subdirectory contains the Espion.tra (spy.tra) file and Transac.tra file.
- Espion.tra (spy.tra): Saves all the transactions carried out by the maintenance of the files in the parent folder.
- Transac.tra: Saves all the transactional incidents in the child folder.
- The TRA subdirectory is where any log file is saved, except those created by the batch server. This can be useful when database errors are difficult to diagnose. Logs are also an important feature for patching and reports – the log files display after automatic processes such as sales order allocations and shipment generations.
- The APL.ini file describes the folder hierarchy for every folder. The adxmother(0) variable holds the direct parent folder name. It is important that you not modify this file. Use the Miscellaneous tab in the Parameters > General Parameters > Folders task within Sage X3 to update many of these parameters.
